We may have already stumbled into “Pumpkin Flavored Everything” season, but in September, apples still reign supreme!
Pick-your-own apple farms are ripe with red, green, and yellow fruits! Many farms also offer petting zoos; hayrides; fresh, farm stand snacks, and even more fun for everyone! Some of my best childhood memories include sucking on flavored honey sticks after apple picking with my family—this is a tradition I intend to pass along to my children.
– Pick firm, bruise-free apples.
– Apples are considered ripe about 130+ days after the tree flowers (depending on variety). Ask the farmer which tree is likely the ripest.
– Apples ripen from the outside of the tree, inward. So, the outer apples are the ripest.
– Twist the apple in an upward direction, and tug.
Here are some of our favorite pick-your-own apple farms in New Hampshire. Find more pick-your-own apple farms in our helpful guide or visit our NH Pick-Your-Own Farms Page and browse our interactive map!

They have a great selection of homemade baked goods including donuts, pies, whoopie pies. The people at the Carter Hill Orchard make you feel like family when you are there. They also do wagon rides!” –NH.com Fan, Christina C.
DeMeritt Hill Farm
This farm was founded around 1820 by the DeMeritt family as a family farm. As such it would have produced the dairy products, meat, wool and vegetables necessary to sustain. In 2007, the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food named us a ‘Farm of Distinction’. This award has only been given out to a handful of exceptional New Hampshire farms in the past 10 years. We are very proud to be included in this select group. This recognition makes all of the hard work we do each season worth it!
Low-spray apples (pick your own or picked by us), unpasteurized cider, fall vegetables, jams and jellies from our own produce, baked goods. We believe that the flavor of an apple, or any other food, is enhanced by connection with the place where it was grown, and we hope that you will feel that connection here. Nearly everything we sell in the store is made here, as much as possible from our own produce, and we sell only here at the orchard and at a few local outlets.
