May is Nashua Sculptures Month and time to celebrate the tenth annual Nashua International Sculpture Symposium. Three international sculptors will be spending three weeks in Nashua, each creating a large granite or metal outdoor sculpture to be given to the City and installed in a public place for all to enjoy.
Truly a community project, the public is encouraged to welcome the sculptors, host them in their homes, provide meals, visit the sculptors as they work, learn about their cultures and thank them at the Closing. Nashua is the only city in the United States with an annual international sculpture symposium. Google Nashua Sculpture Symposium to view all the sculptures.
To celebrate the tenth anniversary, the 2017 Symposium sculptors are returning to Nashua from Vietnam (Mai Thu Van), Costa Rica (Tony Jimenez) and upstate New York (Tom Huff). The 2017 Symposium theme is ‘Together.’ The sculptors will be directed by John Weidman, sculptor, co-founder and director of the Andres Institute of Art, Brookline, NH.
The Opening Reception is Thursday, May 11th from 6-8 pm at the Nashua Airport, Hangar 81, at 81 Perimeter Road. The public is encouraged to attend and welcome the 2017 sculptors to Nashua. Enjoy locally prepared food, beverages and don’t miss this unique occasion to meet our returning sculptors. An anonymous donor has generously gifted vintage paperweights and vintage perfume bottles. Attendees will have the opportunity to own a vintage paperweight or perfume bottle in return for a donation toward a sculpture sponsorship. Tickets ($15) to the Opening Reception may be purchased on line at cityartsnashua.org, at several downtown establishments (Beckonings, JaJa Belles, Fortin Gage and Glorious Possibilities), or at the door.
The sculptors will work throughout the three weeks at NIMCO in the Millyard. The public is welcome to visit as they work Monday through Saturday, 8:30am to 5:30pm from May 15th through June 1nd. The Symposium culminates with the Closing on Saturday, June 3th at 1pm. Everyone is welcome to meet behind City Hall. Trolleys will be available to take people to the three new installations or people can follow in their cars.
