January 2017 is the 33rd Annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. For a band to compete they must be nominated or win at a Blues Society Challenge. The Granite State Blues Society has been sending competitors for several years. This year the artists in all three categories have graced stages in Memphis before.
Sunday will start with Veronica Lewis our Youth Showcase Nomination. Veronica’s style is boogie woogie and she keeps the “chop” going with a solid left hand and upbeat tunes. Veronica’s love for the blues and boogie woogie was obvious from an early age – she began playing piano at age six.
Arthur James has represented the Granite State in the band category and in the solo category in the previous years. Arthur was a finalist in Memphis in 2015. He has a solo album “Me, Myself, and I” that is receiving international air play.
Erin Harpe along with her band the Delta Swingers represents the Granite State in the band category this year. They will take the stage shortly after 3:00 p.m. with their unique brand of dance music is rooted in vintage 1930’s Mississippi delta blues, then shaken and stirred with other genres like soul, funk, and reggae, evoking a wild southern juke joint where the whiskey and gin are flowing and everybody’s dancing.
