Sponsored by the Amherst Lions Club with the Amherst Parent Teacher Association is the second annual chili cook-off and ice cream social. Also that evening, the Amherst Recreation Department will open the AMC outdoors skating rink at 5:30 pm for free skating, featuring a bonfire and music.

Fire — a chili cook-off — has two categories (red and green/white) with first, second and third-place prizes awarded as well as People’s Choice. Ice — an ice cream social — is an all-you-can eat, make-your-own ice cream sundae. In addition to ice cream, the Amherst Junior Women’s Club is donating homemade cakes and cookies. Water, sodas, and hot drinks will also be provided along with corn bread and salad. Hot dogs will also be served.

The PTA will provide selections from their upcoming stage show “The Lion King.” And a variety of local student talent are also scheduled to perform.

Anyone desiring to enter the chili cook-off should contact Lion Bob Gibson at or (603) 234-2660. If email, provide the kind of chili you are bringing, your name, telephone contact number, and how much you plan to bring (minimum two gallons). Deadline for entry is Monday, Jan. 30.

Tickets for this event may be purchased from any Amherst Lions Club, PTA member, or at the door. Cost of a ticket is adult /$10, children (ages 6 to 12)/$5, and children below age 6 are free. Families pay half price with an entry in the chili cook-off.

Net proceeds from this collaborative effort go to support local youth charities.
