Fred Marple presents humorous Guide to New England, Dec. 3 in New Boston

The Community Church of New Boston presents Yankee humorist Fred Marple’s “Guide to New England (for Locals and People from Away)” on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7:00 pm as a benefit for the church Helping Hand Fund.

“The Guide to New England is a look at the way we Yankees dress, eat, talk, and behave,” says Fred Marple. “There are a lot of things that seem to confuse outsiders, and even make us scratch our own heads at time.

Fred will explain life in a small town where everyone knows your business–often before you do–and the people who live in those towns, from the cheapskate native to the affluent transplant. He’ll discuss Yankee food–including why we think baked beans and vegetables boiled with a piece of corned beef are examples of haute cuisine–and he’ll examine Yankee fashion, from the ever-present flannel to rummage sale ensembles. He’ll discuss our love affair with old houses, which persists despite bats in the attic and wiring possibly installed by Ben Franklin.

Fred–also known as humorist Ken Sheldon–has appeared on New Hampshire Chronicle, on radio, in the pages of Yankee Magazine and New Hampshire Magazine, and in his own variety show Frost Heaves. Fred has been called “hilarious,” “a hoot,” and “…the voice of New Hampshire as Bert & I once were to Mainiacs.”

Fred Marple’s “A Guide to New England” will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Community Church on Central Square in New Boston. Tickets are $15 in advance at New Boston Hardware and at, $20 at the door. For a preview of the show visit online.

Coffee, cider and dessert will be available for purchase, also to benefit the Helping Hand Fund.
